The Tastes of Christkindlmarkt

One of the very best parts of the Salzburg’s Christkindlmarkt is the food & drink. Here are some market-musts when it comes to indulging in all things delicious:

  • Kaiserschmarrn: light fluffy and delicious caramelized pancake. Chopped up, sprinkled powdered sugar and served warm with plum sauce on the side.

  • Chesnuts (Maroni): Yes, chestnuts roasted on an open fire can be found throughout the market. It’s one of our favorite snacks. Sweet, delicious AND filling!

  • Gulaschsuppe: Because nothing is more warming then a bowl of Gulaschsuppe with a fresh Semmel roll to dip into it.
  • Gluhwein: Hot mulled wine served traditionally during the winter here in Austria. Nothing is more relaxing then strolling through the markets, snow falling with a hot cup of Gluhwein in hand. You also get a souvenir mug when you order that’s 3 euros. You can either keep the cup as a reminder of how drunk you got Christmas shopping, or return it and get your 3 euros back. The choice is yours!
  • Punsch: This delicious wine and rum combination is also served warm. Be careful, Punsch can be sneaky!

There are endless options for food & drink at Christkindlmarkt, but these are just some of our favorites. Of course you can never go wrong with a classic sausage or “Bosna.” Basically, be sure you come HUNGRY!
