Malta’s Azure Window was a landmark of the country. A famous backdrop for Khaleesi and Khal Drogo’s wedding in Game of Thrones. It’s where people came from all over the world, just to feel a sense of magic.
And it’s also where we celebrated our 2nd wedding anniversary in October 2016. Just months before the Azure Window would be referred to in the past tense and not the present…
March 8th 2017: The Azure Window collapses from heavy storms.
What? How? Why? It can’t be true…?
This magnificent piece of nature all of a sudden, no longer exists?
Just like that. One minute it was there (well, for 500 years) and then the next it wasn’t. The horizon became unfamiliar. The landscape changed shape. And those 500 years of adventure, wonder, and discoveries that left their mark on its limestone were just lost at sea.
We both felt heartbroken to hear the news.
First, it was a state of shock, then sadness, ending with an insane appreciation for the fact that we took that trip in the first place.
That we shared that special day of love on October 18th with the Azure Window in all its glory…
Our Favorite Moments at the Azure Window
When I tell you this day was one of the best days of our lives, I am in no way exaggerating.
I remember saying those exact words. Feeling on top of the world. Like the universe was giving us this ONE day where every little moment would be perfect.
My heart was so full. We were in the most beautiful country of Malta, and planned to spend the entire day exploring with no agenda. Going with the flow and embracing it all, with no distractions. No social media, no phone calls. Just us, one small backpack and never-ending possibilities.
So it’s hard to pick the best moments of this day. But if I had to pick, most happened at the Azure Window in Gozo…
The journey of getting there.
You know your day is awesome when…
It starts at the Blue Lagoon on Comino Island. Where you find yourself swimming in the bluest water imaginable before any tourists arrive. Sipping honey liquor with clear blue skies and your surroundings straight out of a postcard.
Then your day takes you on a boat to Gozo, an island of Malta. En route to Gozo’s most famous landmark – the Azure Window.
When we got here, we were greeted by a few pushy cab drivers. And then we met Joseph. He gave us a discount, told us to hop right in and took us on a journey across the island of Gozo.
But this was in no way just a cab ride. Joseph toured us around the entire island! Stopping so we could see famous Churches on the way. Telling us the entire history of the area. This is where he was born and raised and he was proud.
When we got there, we took his card and called him whenever we needed a ride, for the rest of our time in Gozo! He was the best. So genuine and passionate about his home country. We felt incredibly happy thanks to Joseph.
So our arrival to the Azure Window could not have been more perfect.
A Boat Ride into its CAVES.
As I said, we were totally going with the flow today. The things we saw and liked, we just did. No questions asked.
And that led us into taking a boat ride into the caves below the Azure Window.
For 4 euros each, we went on one of the most enjoyable boat rides of all time. (I seriously wrote those exact words in my journal from that day!)
The boat took us through a cave passageway that led to the open sea and to the caves below the window.
Inside the caves, there is pastel purple coral attached to the rocks. It looks like someone tie-dyed the rock in pastel colors. We were in complete awe of the colorful and flawless nature that exists here.
After the caves, the boat drove right UNDER the Azure Window! What a cool feeling. Just seeing this impressive structure from below left me speechless. Like seeing something entirely different than what we saw from the ground above.
When our journey underneath was complete and we got enough pictures and video (are there ever REALLY enough?!) They left us back at the shore.
Now it was time to see this masterpiece from the rocks (where most of its famous pictures are taken…)
Marveling at a window of wonder…
One of our very favorite memories of all was really just standing there, taking it all in. Gosh, it’s hard to explain how it felt to witness such beauty. It’s humbling and mesmerizing.
You can’t help but be completely present and in the moment. Nothing else could possibly interfere.
A GIANT window, made of limestone, at the edge of the ocean. Framing nothing but the bright blue Mediterranean and the Maltese sky.
It’s unreal. Magic. Nature that formed and turned into a 500-year-old masterpiece.
After about an hour of taking as many pictures as we could, our eyes locked on the Blue Hole below. A famous diving spot right at the base of the Azure Window.
It was time for a swim.
Under the Azure Window.
The very best part of our magical day at the Azure Window was swimming right underneath it. I’d never swam in a cooler place in my entire life and I remember thinking and saying exactly that, over and over again.
The water is such a deep bright blue, and perfectly clear at the same time. There were tons of divers, jumping into the famous Blue Hole to explore the vast ocean below.
We carefully walked over the sharp and slippery rocks (water shoes are a requirement, which we, of course, neglected to bring) and swam across the Blue Hole, looking out for those diving.
And then we swam!
We swam right under the Azure Window. Snapping as many selfies as we could with our Sony ActionCam. It was surely a moment to remember. I honestly couldn’t have felt happier.
Here I was swimming in the bluest water with the love of my life, on our 2nd wedding anniversary under the most intriguing formation I have ever witnessed. It was the best feeling and one that I will always associate with the Azure Window.
It felt so surreal, so magical to witness this wonder as you’re swimming below. One of those moments where you HAVE to pinch yourself. When you truly realize just how beautiful the world is because it’s there right in front of your eyes.
And now that beauty just doesn’t exist? Somehow, I just can’t wrap my mind around it.
Remembering the Azure Window
The loss of the Azure Window hit us both really hard. Not only because of the tragedy of losing such an incredible piece of this world and of our trip to Malta. But because so many had yet to experience it.
I guess you can say we are lucky to have taken this trip to Malta. Lucky to have shared such a special day with the Azure Window.
So the moral of the story?
The time is now.
Stop waiting. Book that trip. Visit places before you no longer have that luxury to visit them anymore.
The world is so precious and so mesmerizing. If you never take that trip of your dreams, what if you can’t later on? You will never live it down. You will never forgive yourself.
So, no more excuses. Get out of your comfort zone and just make it happen. Time should never be taken for granted. Because even something as stable as the Azure Window, something that’s existed for 500 years may suddenly disappear.
It’s time to live your life without the excuse of tomorrow.
And we promise your perseverance will pay off in more ways than you can imagine…
